Exhibited in Hsinchu City Art Gallery from 2nd June to 27th August, 2017, Aesthetics of Interpretation – Fashion ‧ Crossover ‧Contemporary Art Show consists of three sections – <Speculation of Aesthetics – How Could Aesthetics Be?>, which guides the audiences to learn about the six elements of aesthetics through hands-on practices; <Association of Aesthetics – The Creative Program of Crossover Celebrities and Charity>, where creations of celebrities from different professions, most of which are the creators’ debut, are exhibited to let viewers think about non-artists’ imagination and presentation; and <Sense of Aesthetics – The Vision of Artists>, where creations of six contemporary crossover artists are exhibited, including painting, sculpture, installation, dance, clothing, new media interaction and other media, pushing viewers to experience the artists’ interpretation and speculation of aesthetics.

The six contemporary crossover artists in the exhibition display their experiences and reflections on aesthetics from different aspects. Chih Hsien Tsai is not only a costume designer but also a sculptor. Using both soft and hard materials to create, he designs natural and simple clothes, while creating iron works of reserved vitality. Yolanda Pong creates paintings and metal-works with abstract symbols, shapes and medium, constructing imaginary scenes. C. J. Yeh created an interactive installation with face-identifying and dynamic tracking techniques, guiding viewers to rethink the definition of aesthetics. The boundary of dance performance and life is blurred in Chieh Hua Jeff Hsieh and I Fen Tung’s creation, which allows everyone to choreograph, showing the aesthetics of rhythm of them and the others. Ya Han Lin, a local artist of Hsinchu, draws the outline of aesthetics with ink and the Nihonga. On the other hand, many elites in circles of business, media, medicine, law, etc. are invited to participate in “The Creative Program of Crossover Celebrities and Charity”. On 20 x 20cm cm canvas, they use various creative techniques to interpret aesthetics. Then, the creations are auctioned during the charity auction held in exhibition period. The income is donated to the Hsinchu Association of Autism for the autistic children’s aesthetic education, while the viewers rethink the possibility of aesthetics through the correspondence of “artists” or “non-artists” in the exhibition.

<Speculation of Aesthetics – How could aesthetics be?>
Aesthetics has been an ancient question for both eastern and western philosophers. In the 18th century, German philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714~1762) first rectified the term “aesthetics”, advocating using the word for the study of perceptual knowledge. What is aesthetics? Where does aesthetics come from? How to judge aesthetics? As aesthetics is a study of perception and everyone’s sense differs, it is difficult to define aesthetics. Despite that there is no fixed definition for aesthetics, there is an acceptable, comfortable and pleasant style for most people, that is, the aesthetic elements. This section tries to provide the basic knowledge of aesthetics, including the six aesthetic elements – color, proportion, texture, composition, structure and construction. An interactive area is also designed for the audiences to experience aesthetics and gather possibilities for aesthetic through hand-on works.

<Association of Aesthetics – The Creative Program of Crossover Celebrities and Charity>
How to see the aesthetics of in the others’ mind? How do the elites of different professions express aesthetics? 41 crossover celebrities are invited to participate in this section, picking any subject to create with any media on 20 x 20 cm canvas. In addition, 12 autistic children are invited to show their creations collectively, displaying the abundant aesthetic imagination of non-artists. All the creations in this section are auctioned on 20, August 2017 in the Hsinchu City Art Gallery. The creators agree that the works are auctioned at starting price NT$ 3,000, indicating all creations are equal. The income of the auction is donated to the Hsinchu Association of Autism for the autistic children’s aesthetic education, encouraging them to explore art continuously.

<Sense of Aesthetics – The vision of artists>
Aesthetics exists in daily experiences, thus, we have to start from the awareness of senses if we want to recognize it. Through the contemporary artists’ interpretation of aesthetics, the audiences can experience what artists have experienced. In this section, six crossover artists, including Chih Hsien Tsai, Yolanda Pong, C.J. Yeh, Chieh Hua Jeff Hsieh, I Fen Tung and Ya Han Lin, use different creating media to respond to daily aesthetics. Being an artist of costume design, art creation and space design, Chih Hsien Tsai once said that “When wearing each unique handmade clothe, the model would look like a living sculpture.” He also believes that we easterners have our cultural aesthetics and vision of local aesthetics. In Yolanda Pong’s composite-medium paintings, dots, lines, planes, abstract symbols, brushstrokes, objects and other media are used to construct a space with depth. Recently, she is also dedicated to metal creations and soft sculptures. Pong used to host TLC channel’s show, “From House to Home,” promoting the aesthetics of daily life, winning the show hosting award in 45th Golden Bell Award. C. J. Yeh, sojourning in New York, currently teaches in the New York Fashion Design Institute (FIT). Focusing on the impact of technology on senses recently, his creation “Perfect 10” uses technology of face recognition and dynamic tracking. As the audiences change their facial expression by shouting, the appearances alter, then the new faces acquired vanish like a fleeting show. While the audiences enjoy the gorgeous and temporary satisfaction in their shouts, they are pushed to ponder upon beauty and self-identification. The interactive dance installation “You Choreography”, created by Chieh Hua Jeff Hsieh and I Fen Tung, allows the audiences to enter and exit the space freely, choose the earphones and move with the instructions in the earphones. In the installation, the diversity of body’s beauty in daily life is performed, while the connection between the body and the others is rethought. Portraying human emotions and life experiences with hair, Ya han Lin uses ink and the Nihonga to depict women’s hairlines, blended the delicate and tangled thoughts into the scene, forming the graceful and eastern soft image.
